Jason Sharp is a Montreal based baritone saxophonist /
composer who’s sound is a combination of his interests
in jazz, contemporary classical, electronic, rock,
free form improvisation, and Arabic classical music.
Threading these diverse influences together, Jason has
developed a uniquely vibrant sound in the groups he
contributes to.
Leading the 7-piece group Mobius, Jason explores the
sonic possibilities of a large acoustic ensemble
infused into lush electronic sound-scapes. Featuring
some of Montreal’s finest improvisers Jason has
created a powerful cinematic musical experience that
has reached critical acclaim. Mobius made their debut
in the 2006 edition of the Suoni per il Popolo
festival in Montreal with special guest NYC
saxophonist Micahel Blake and released their self
titled album later that year.
As a founding member of Ka Noo, Jason has developed a
unique acoustic concept by adding the Hohner Saxophone
(a hybrid of a saxophone and harmonica originating
from the 1920’s) and the Fujara (a 5 ½ foot tall
Slovakian Bass Overtone Flute) to his repertoire of
instruments. This instrumentation has led to a
distinctive ensemble sound presenting a unique blend
of free improvisation, folk, and Arabic classical
music.
Jason has also been commissioned to compose music for
multiple contemporary dance choreographers. In 2006 he
had pieces premier at the Yukon Arts Center, Vancouver
International Dance Festival, and the FIDA
International Dance Festival.
As an in demand sideman, Jason can be heard in a wide
variety of groups in the Montreal area. Josh Zubot’s
Mendahm Quartet and Crouched Head, Improv Collective
Kalmunity, Free Jazz / Dub Band Ark of Infinity, Jazz
/ Soul artist Malika Tirolien, and is a regular guest
in Moondata’s Improvising series Labprojects.
Jason holds a B.MUS in Jazz Performance from the
University of Toronto where he studied with Mike
Murley, Kirk MacDonald, Alex Dean, and Phil Nimmons.
He continued his studies in composition at the
Conservatorium van Amsterdam and in 2006 received a
Conseil des Arts et des Lettres Grant to study with
Ellery Eskelin, Michael Blake, and Ben Allison in New
York City.
