Paul Nedzela was born in New York City on March 12, 1984. The son of a former bass player, he was exposed to jazz and classical music from an early age. He started playing the tenor saxophone at the age of 11, but felt his true calling was the baritone to which he switched a year later. Since then, he has studied with some of the foremost baritone saxophinists in the world, including, Joe Temperely, Gary Smulyan, and Roger Rosenberg. While pursuing his musical studies, Paul concurrently went on with his academic career and graduated with honors in 2006 from McGill University in Montreal with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics.
A recipient of the Samuel L. Jackson scholarship award, he continued his musical studies at The Juilliard School and graduated with a Master of Music degree in 2008. He has played with many ronowned artists, including Christian McBride, Maria Schneider, Benny Golson, Gerald Wilson, James Moody, Carl Allen, Eric Reed, Victor Goines, Herlin Riley, Reginald Veal, Wess Anderson, and Wycliff Gordon. He has also played in major festivals around the world such as The Banff Music Festival, The International Montreal Jazz Festival, and The American Festival of the Arts in Doha, Qatar. Paul's career has advanced both as a leader and as a sideman with, among others, The Montreal Afro-Cuban Jazz Band, Frank Sinatra Jr., The Jazz Museum in Harlem All Stars, and The David Berger Jazz Orchestra. Most recently, he has performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and recorded with Wynton Marsalis.
