Brian Landrus


Brian Landrus is quickly becoming know as one of the new voices on baritone saxophone and bass clarinet. His CD "Forward" can be found at www.CadenceJazzRecords.com and his CD "Everlasting" will be at www.cimprecords.com soon.

Brian Landrus was born in Reno, NV in 1978. He starting playing saxophone at age 12 and quickly fell in love with music. Focus in life became music-listening, playing, creating. Landrus kept experimenting with new instruments and began to grow a palette of sound through the various combinations of woodwinds. Doubling became an obvious strength and being able to play with different timbres and diversity helped to hone his compositional awareness. Landrus started playing professionally at 14, subbing for his wonderful teacher Frank Perry. Frank lead weekly gigs playing standards with a quintet. Brian started playing shows when he was 16 and was asked to play with the legendary bands The Coasters and The Drifters. Landrus started composing when he was 16. Brian continued to gig and record while he went to the University of Nevada Reno where he completed his bachelors degree in music performance. By this time Landrus had been focusing on baritone, tenor and soprano sax, flute, and clarinet. After leading his own small big band, The Landrus Project, for six years, he moved to Boston to attend the New England Conservatory of Music. At NEC, Brian received two master of music degrees: jazz composition and jazz performance. He was also awarded the conservatory's highest individual award, the Gunther Schuller Medal. Brian recorded the CD "Forward" in 2007 while still in Boston. This CD features some of the beautiful people that he worked with in Boston. "Forward" has been recently released on the world renown Cadence Jazz Records (CJR 1218). Brian moved to NYC in 2007. He recorded "Everlasting" for CIMP records (CIMP 382) and is due to be released by summer of 2010.

Landrus has focused on baritone, tenor, and soprano saxophones, bass clarinet, and bass flute. Brian is faculty at the 92Y School of Music in Manhattan where he teaches saxophone and the jazz ensembles. He is also on faculty at the Lagond Music School where he teaches composition, saxophone, flute, and clarinet.
